Subject: Interview With Gustav Schäfer Wed Mar 10, 2010 8:09 pm
You come from a musical family? No, I think my dad plays guitar ... do not know, he only plays for me ... my sister tried to play guitar, but got nothing ... so no, my grandfather ... not think anyone plays music .. in my family, so I am not alone.
Because you have chosen the drums? My parents had a lot of rock music, so .. Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and always in the evenings at dinner on the table was playing, then my father said, ok, get out of here with your food and can eat on the floor and then I think that after two or three months it took me to a music school and the teacher said, ehh, if you are very small and had 4 years so was very little, if .. and then my father told the teacher that that was what I had ... and if so was my beginning with the drums.
Who inspired you when you started playing? My father is a concert by Phil Collins and there is a drum solo with Chester Thompson on stage ... it was just incredible, it was just incredible and I think it is 7 minutes and that was, I think that was the click in my life, my father told me, ok if you want to play in front of this audience, would have 10,000 people or more, 10,000 people ... and so you must practice, practice practice and I've practiced, practiced, practiced ... I think, I really want to play with Phil Collins on stage but I think it is so "... I do not know, maybe in some years
Who inspires you today? uhm, there is much that I really love drummers, are Danny Carey of Tool, Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers and if there is a lot drummers. Danny Carey has a really, really incredible style to play the drums and Chad Smith as well so, if these are some of my favorite drummers
You prefer to play in a recording studio or playing live? Both. Both. I really have to say that both in the studio, maybe ... I must say that 55% and 45% live in the studio because the studio is always like, you know ... you ... we all band together, all producers and I'm the drummer and I play everything ... everything ... so I play everything you can touch, not much, I know, but I play all these things for a song and sometimes I play, I play and play and then I hear no click and it's 'Oh shit' have stopped, ok I should stop otravez and they all say. Gustav ok so please (laughter) and then I say .. Yeah, OK, why not. And live, it's just .. You know, you play to the public, you show everybody what you've done all year in this record and if, when you see the audience screaming, do not know why, I believe that scream for me, I do not know, but you know everything the world are wondering who has done this so I know I'm the guy who has done that, yes.
How to balance making music with the music business? As I really do not like things the business, I'm more for music, so I hate giving interviews and that is maybe ... I'm a shy boy, and never talk too much, I know, but that so do not talk too much because I like the interviews, if Man: Let's stop here! Gus: Yes, let's stop here! (laughs)
What advice would you give to young drummers? If, starting as early as you can and always had a guy in the music school so I had lessons with another drummer and teacher together and hate notes to play with ... .. and all the things I've always been the guy that said, ok, let me play what I want, so if .. I think sometimes it's better to play .. initially in the music school for three or four years, all you need, and then play what you want
What attracted you to Meinl Cymbals? That's .. that's ... I do not know .. really do not know .. No, actually I like cymbals, my first set of cymbals for my first battery was sunderground set. Red. He had a high and a drum. Both were of Meinl cymbals. It really paid off. It was like 15 years ago. I loved.
Meinl What supplements are best complements your style? The Mb20. I love it. I like that sounds really strong and hard. And that "crash" I love the "splash".
Meinl cymbal your favorite and why A good question, a very good question ... I love all. I love it all, so I chose cymbals. I like them all. They are incredible, they have very good sound.
What is your ultimate goal as a musician? We like 10 years together and there have been many goals since then ... we are, we played on stage ... we had 10 people in front of the stage, we had 50 people in front of the stage ... and, you know when I look back, we had a concert and public had people 35 years and we had, like, 12 or 13? ... and we had 9 songs. So, you say, well there are 9 songs, each song would be like 3 minutes, we could play maybe 25 minutes or half an hour. And we played an hour and half. They were all drunk and we played 3 times the same setlist. And that was for me a goal and you know, play anywhere in Europe, playing in America. I love to play with (***) and Phil Collins. But this is a dream and a dream that never will come true .. you never know
